As the penalty shootout unfolded, he stepped forward to be part of a glorious history. He struck the ball with finesse and force….cleanly. It crashed against the underside of the crossbar, bounced behind the goal line and spun back into play.
To many of the spectators, it was a goal.
Victor Ikpeba, thinking otherwise, agonisingly clasped his head in both hands. The referee ruled it a no-goal. Whether he was influenced by Victor's reaction or by his own sight of the ball's trajectory, or both, we may never know.

Play continued. Cameroon eventually won the shootout 4–3, lifted the trophy for a third time, and unleashed a deluge of disappointment and agony onto the tens of thousands of Nigerian football fans packed into the Main Bowl of the National Stadium in Surulere, Lagos, Nigeria, and the millions more watching across the nation.
